Description

Densely tufted herb. Leaves linear-ensiform, 15–50 cm long, flat to terete, finely striate, glabrous; margins pubescent to whitish-tomentose near base, glabrescent distally. Scape 3–55 cm long, pubescent in upper part, clasped by 1 reduced leaf. Spathes ovate to lanceolate, 2–6 cm long, prominently veined, white-silky to glabrescent, blackish. Involucre 7–14 mm wide; inner bracts slightly exserted. Tube 1.5–3 cm long, lower half pubescent. Sepals broadly ovate, obtuse, 2–3 cm long, 1.5–2.5 cm wide, blue-violet. Petals ovate. Filaments 4–7 mm long, c. two-thirds connate. Ovary pubescent. Capsule ovoid-cylindrical, 1.5–2.5 cm long. Seeds cylindrical, c. 2.5 mm long, wrinkled, with large pit; aril absent.
